The First Punic War was a conflict that occurred between 264 BC and 241 BC between Rome and Carthage, two of the most powerful Mediterranean powers at the time. It was mainly sparked by the dispute over control of Sicily. The war was characterized by a series of naval and land battles, with Rome improvising a naval fleet to confront the powerful Carthaginian navy. Although Carthage initially had an advantage at sea, Rome managed to achieve some crucial victories, such as the battles of Mylae and the Aegates Islands. Hamilcar Barca led the Carthaginian resistance in Sicily, but ultimately the war ended with Rome's victory. The Treaty of Lutatius ended the conflict, with Carthage ceding Sicily to Rome and paying an indemnity. This war marked the rise of Rome as the dominant power in the western Mediterranean and significantly weakened Carthage, laying the groundwork for future conflicts between the two powers.
