Nature at Your Door Frank Taylor

Black Rat Snake in hand, this snake demonstrates for us all the different ways it will defend itself or avoid predation. A fascinating array of behavioral and physiological strategies are displayed. First the snake lies motionless and tries to avoid detection. Second, the snake will try to escape or flee. Third the snake coils up and strikes and/or bites. Fourth, the snake changes its head shape from oblong to triangular and vibrates its tail like a rattlesnake. If those 4 strategies fail the snake will release a foul smelling musk and defecate as well. The scientific name of this snake Pantherophus alleghaniensis is broken down and explained. Panther of course, means, panther. Ophus means snake, so the genus name means "panther snake"! The species designation "Alleghaniensis" refers to the high ridges of the Applachian mountain range were early taxonomist collect first species for taxonomic categorization. Great for home schoolers, kids at home from public school because of covid and general learning about nature and biology!
