If you're struggling trying to fix an airy flute sound, try the simple tips in this quick flute tone tutorial. Think of your flute sound as having two distinct parts, the core and the cushion. The core is the projective center of the flute tone. The cushion is an airy padding around the core (full of overtones and harmonics) that gives depth and warmth to the flute sound.

Finding a good balance between the core and cushion in your flute tone can give it an open and generous quality. However, if the core and cushion are out of balance, it will come across as “airy” flute tone.

The solution to an airy flute sound, is not always to remove the airiness (clean/focus the sound). Sometimes, this can lead to weak and thin flute tone. Instead, a better way to fix airy flute sound is to add more core to your flute sound to balance out the cushion. With the right balance, the core of your flute tone becomes more prominently audible than the airy cushion.

Don’t back off an airy flute sound. Instead, work to add more body and core to your flute tone!
