LK Advani, has been awarded the Bharat Ratna. An important leader of the Jana Sangh and then the BJP, former deputy PM is seen as the prime mover behind the movement which led to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. His tenure as home minister was also when charges against himself and other leaders accused of demolition were taken away. His tenure also saw the Kandahar plane hijack leading to jailed militants being handed over to the Taliban. His journey to Pakistan where he visited Jinnah’s grave led eventually to a long winter and eventual consignment to a Margdarshak Mandal. He was not present when the Trust consecrated the temple at Ayodhya in January.
