Aircraft crash in the Kabaty forest of the Ił62M SPLBG passenger plane "Tadeusz Kosciuszko" of LOT Polish Airlines, which occurred on May 9, 1987, at 11:12, during flight No. 5055 on the WarsawNew York route, during the approach for an emergency landing, after engine failures.

The Commission investigating the causes of the disaster determined that in the final stage of the approach to an emergency landing, as a result of the widening damage to the aircraft and the fire on board, the crew lost the ability to effectively control it, which resulted in the collision of the plane with the ground. The disaster occurred in Warsaw, on the southern edge of the Kabacki Forest, 5,700 meters from the threshold of the runway in the direction of 33 airports WarsawOkęcie.

As a result of the disaster, 183 people died on the spot all on board the aircraft and the aircraft was destroyed. Trees in the Kabacki Forest were also destroyed in the area of ​​a rectangle measuring approximately 370 × 50 meters.

In terms of the number of victims, it is the largest aviation disaster in the history of Polish aviation.
