The Aeroporto de Cristiano Ronaldo is not a normal international airport, it is number 9 among the 10 most dangerous airports in the world.
It is located directly on the side of a cliff with dangerous wind shear which makes landings particularly difficult and challenging.

In contrast to other airports, only specially trained pilots with additional training are allowed to land here. This is because the topography means that an instrument landing system (ILS) cannot be used here and therefore the approach and landing can only be carried out by visual means.
When landing from the sea side on RWY 05, this occurs with a spectacular steep 180 degree approach curve.

After various accidents due to the runway being too short, the runway was extended from 1,800 to 2,777 meters in 2000 to make it safer and so that almost all aircraft could land there.

The nice thing about this airport is that you can experience flight operations up close not only from the visitors' terrace, but also from the many spots around the airport.
