I have used several different flint and steel fire kits over the last 30 years. Flint and steel fire is probably my 2nd most used method ... maybe third because it probably goes like bic lighter, ferro rod, flint and steel, then friction fires like bow drill or hand drill or similar. The nice thing about flint and steel fires is once you have the steel, everything else can be created in the field ... i.e., you can probably find a flint rock or chert rock or some other rock that sparks, you can make char cloth out of wood bark, wood pieces, pieces of clothing, dry leaves or other biomass, and then all you need is a somewhat tight container but I have made it using a steel cup with a lid no problems. Sometimes i simply misplace the flint and steel kits I have or they got lost in moves or i simply gave them away to friends or family who I taught how to use them and the methods of replenishing them. Once upon a time when black powder muzzle loaders were more popular, you could buy bulk English black flint (the good stuff). I bought such a bag in the early 1990's and still have several pieces left. Around 2015, i bought an ESEE fire steel because i loved the idea of having the spindle dimple on it ... once less thing to do in the wilderness or survival situation and time is money or in an emergency time can mean life or death. So i bought 2 of them because at the time i basically maintained 2 kits in my vehicles. I really like having all my gear the same between kits that way i inherently know the strengths and weaknesses of the gear no matter which kit i have. Keeping a gear set in each vehicle also keeps me from having to remember to move it each time i switch vehicles. So anywho, i also have "around the house kits" ...which is just whatever i am testing and may be a haversack or a day bag or various gear that i haven't decided to use in my get home bags in the vehicles. So i needed another fire steel. Sure, i could just use my knife spine or a multitool but i really don't want to because i don't abuse my gear "just because i can". Instead I'm more a "i will abuse my gear when i have no other choices". That is why i carry a dedicated fire steel as part of my flint and steel kit. I'm not particular whether i use chert rock or true English flint because with good quality fire steels, they work equally well. I have seen some fire steels that due to their size, shape, or chemical composition, they just don't do as well as others. That's the point I'm trying to make and why i like the style of the ESEE fire steels. My rant is about ESEE prices have gotten to be crazy and the fact you can buy a Chinese knockoff at 1/3 the price that is equal in quality as shown in this video just confirms that. I'm brand loyal until i see with my own eyes the value of another brand. I won't spend $30+ on another fire steel when i can get the same thing for $10.
