Judge Howard Coates made a downward departure Thursday when sentencing a Florida father who was convicted of abusing one of his children. Timothy Ferriter was sentenced to 60 months in prison, followed by a fiveyear probation, for physically abusing his adopted son with a belt and confining him to a cratesized room. The room only locked from the outside and the child would sometimes have to use a bucket for a bathroom. Ferriter's wife, Tracy Ferriter, was arrested for similar charges and has yet to go on trial.
