   • Flow: 4,000 Miles Down the Missouri R...

Dirk Rohrbach dares to attempt what only eleven people before him have achieved: he paddles in a selfbuilt wooden kayak along North America's longest river system, from its source to the sea. From the Rocky Mountains, through the Great Plains and the Midwest, all the way to the Deep South and the Gulf of Mexico. 6,000 kilometers on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers through America. Along the way, the photographer and adventurer explores the small settlements and bustling metropolises on the riverbanks of America's most vital artery. He encounters descendants of Native Americans, musicians, captains, and "river rats"—quirky characters who could never imagine life without the river.

For this journey, Dirk Rohrbach builds a wooden kayak and sets out to find Brower's Spring, the source of the Missouri in the Rocky Mountains, somewhere between Idaho and Montana. On a mountain bike, he follows the initial streams through the grand Centennial Valley and then enters his kayak at Clark Canyon, which takes him to Three Forks, where three rivers officially form the Missouri.

The Missouri flows through spectacular mountain landscapes. In his boat, Dirk Rohrbach reaches the Gates of the Mountains, a deep canyon of breathtaking scenery. He meets fly fishermen in their drift boats. The upper Missouri is considered one of the best spots for trout fishing. After two weeks, Dirk finally reaches Great Falls, home to the five major waterfalls of the Missouri. Below, the raging waters of the Morony Rapids await. Are the rapids too dangerous for Dirk and his wooden boat?
