FLY FISHING NEW MEXICO | CHASING DESERT TROUT | UNEXPECTED SALMON FLY HATCH | JEMEZ NATIONAL FOREST

Looks can be deceiving. Dry red rock surrounded by sage brush and mesquite does not seem like the ideal trout fishery. Follow that canyon trickle north and you might just find yourself in a desert oasis. Way up in the Jemez National Forest, just a stones throw from Santa Fe, there are a number of really healthy trout streams. These ultra clear desert streams flow cold and are an ideal way to beat the mid day New Mexico heat. Now I will note, fly fishing for trout is best done in the mornings and evenings.. NOT in the middle of the damn day.. I got extremely lucky to even hook into a fish, let alone land it! That fish was such a desert gem and it's amazing to think that wild brown trout can thrive in a place like this. The cherry on top was getting to observe all the cool aquatic and terrestrial bug life we did. Salmon flies, cicadas, and big mayflies were the main points of interest. The learning curve is real in a place like New Mexico. With so much water across such a wide geographical range, it is going to take a little longer than expected to get dialed in.
