Flying After a Pulmonary Embolism

Follow
Ido Weinberg, MD | Vascular Medicine

Can I fly after a pulmonary embolism (PE)? There are two problems that we need to consider before making that decision. First, is the "breathing problem". There is less available oxygen on the plane than on the ground at sea level. So some people after PE will suffer from shortness of breath. The second is the "clotting problem". Flying may be a riskfactor for clotting in some people. So, if you are off a blood thinner, then flying may be problematic for some people.
