Foetal Alcohol Syndrome describes several physical and mental symptoms caused by a pregnant woman misusing alcohol. A person can be diagnosed with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome even if they do not have all the symptoms. The damage caused by alcohol depends on how much is consumed and the stage of pregnancy that the mother drinks alcohol. The fetuses that survive may have longterm difficulties. The effects of the alcohol on the baby cannot be reversed nor treated. However, early diagnosis and support may limit the impact of the symptoms on a child’s life.
