This week on Brickmania TV, Lando brings us John Canepa and Cody Osell talking about their latest creations and a history lesson with Professor Fitz.

About the Fokker E.III Eindecker:

In the race for a better aircraft, Anthony Fokker set out to design a monoplane that had better top speed and maneuverability than any Allied aircraft. One of the principle problems was mounting a machine gun behind a moving propeller. The Allies had developed something called “deflector gear”, which consisted of a metal plate attached to prevent bullets from tearing up the wooden propeller. Fokker took it a step further and designed “interrupter gear”, which synchronized the machine gun to the propeller. This technology allowed for the design of the Eindecker.

The Fokker Eseries aircraft remained dominant in the skies through the spring of 1916. Allied airmen referred to the E.III as the “Fokker Scourge”, as these warplanes shot down over 1000 Allied aircraft.

About the Nieuport 11:

When the Great War began, several veteran commanders had little idea of how to use aircraft in combat. The obvious application was for reconnaissance, then another aircraft to counter the opposite forces reconnaissance plane. This “backandforth” of aircraft technology pushed the warring nations to continue developing faster, more maneuverable, and betterarmed aircraft through the end of the conflict. Among the Allies, the French Nieuport series of warplanes produced several successful combat models. The Nieuport 11 “Bebe” helped turn the air war in favor of the Allies and was a key factor to Allied success at places like Verdun.

An interesting fact about the Nieuport 11 is that it sometimes featured a crude antiballoon rocket weapon, which could be described as a “glorified bottle rocket”.

Official kit release date is Friday, May 4, 2018.
