Fokker E.III Eindecker reproduction engine runs

Zac "HANDBAG" Yates

This Eindecker (an Engels E.4 fullscale reproduction of the classic Great War fighter aircraft) is operated by the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Blenheim, New Zealand on long term loan from builder Achim Engels of Germany. It is powered by a 9cylinder Gnome Monosupape rotary engine built by Tony Wytenburg's Classic Aero Machining Services (also located at Omaka Aerodrome).

In this video we see Dan Coleman, Graham Orphan and Wayne Tantrum take turns running this magnificent machine on a lovely Marlborough evening (unfortunately I did not film Aaron Patchett's run). It is a sight, sound and smell that needs to be experienced in person to be fully appreciated!

This was filmed on an iPhone 11 and due to limitations of the camera the propeller and engine appear to be rotating in opposite directions: this is not the case on the actual machine, where the rotation of both is counterclockwise when viewed from the cockpit.
