Forest fuel attribute mapping solution: Arbosense fuels (Lidar 100 micro-session 3)

Follow
Canada Wildfire

This special session with Hatfield’s Chen Shang, provides an overview of the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS) and subsequent components, emphasizing the Fire Behavior Prediction System’s methodologies for classifying fuel types. Shang then provides an overview of the methodology and development of the HadfieldUniversity of Lethbridge collaboration on developing the software Arbosense, a fuel modelling tool that aims to improve wildfire response and planning. It should be noted that this tool is still in phase 1 of development and has not been rolled out publicly. Shang addresses the challenges with fuel modelling as well as with software development.

The session was given in a hybrid format to address the University of Lethbridge and Canada Wildfire Network’s introduction to Airborne lidar course (GEOG X030). Session hosts Dr. Chris Hopkinson and Dr. Laura Chasmer have collaboration activities with Hatfield and have collaborated on developing the Arbosense Fuel modeling tool.
