One of the many socalled "crusader states" to have popped up in wake of the First Crusade, the Principality of Antioch spanned parts of modernday Turkey and Syria. Under the reign of Bohemond of Taranto and Tancred, Prince of Galilee, the principality would expand its borders at the expense of the Byzantine Empire and various Seljuk vassals. However, following the disastrous Battle of Harran and eventually fall of Edessa, Antioch went into a period of decline. While this occurred, Nur adDin was able to essentially unite the Muslim factions of the Zengid Sultanate and the famed military leader, Saladin, pushed the Christian crusader states to the brink of collapse. Ultimately though, it would be the Mongol invasion that dealt a final blow to the principality.
