360Portugal - Portugal seen by a portuguese

With prehistoric remains and signs of Roman occupation, the region was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques at the same time as Abrantes (1148), with some popular legends remaining about the Arab presence. Sardoal already existed as a village, with Queen Santa Isabel having given it its charter in the 14th century, although this document has disappeared.
The 16th century is the “golden century” for Sardoal, which became a town, gained independence from Abrantes and saw the emergence of some economic strength, with many of the local nobility involved with the Discoveries. Sardoal was also greatly affected by the Battle of AlcácerQuibir, losing many of its knights. Already in the 18th century, some of Brazil's gold and riches came to adorn this land, since the 1st Bishop of Bahia and primate of Brazil was from Sardoal.
Alongside this space, Sardoal stands out for its Holy Week celebrations, which mark with pomp and devotion from Lent to Easter Sunday.
