If you're looking for an amazing day trip in Eastern North Carolina, consider Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach! Featuring the history of the fort, informative presentations on the people who served there, and what life was like to the many soldiers who lived at the fort, this FREE state park is a must visit!

Additionally, there are over 4 miles of hiking trails, 8 miles of bicycling trails, options for picnicking, fishing, swimming and more! We visited in late December, so swimming was out of the question. However, the beauty of the area around the park was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed the scenery!

"Located in Carteret County 39 miles southeast of New Bern, Fort Macon State Park is centered on an impeccably restored preCivil War fort that offers daily guided tours and frequent cannon and musket demonstrations. Extensive exhibits educate visitors on fort history and the natural surroundings. The beach is perfect for swimming, beachcombing, or even spotting a dolphin or two. Trails traverse the salt marsh and dune fields and provide the opportunity to see one of the 300plus species of birds found in the park."
