FQ 4:7 Intro to Irish fiddle ornaments: “cuts” in Kerfunken jig

Ellery Klein- Fiddler

In FiddleQuest, the Kerfunken Jig is the first jig we’ll learn. In this video we'll learn a couple ornaments ways to “decorate” our tune to make it more interesting.

The “cut” is an imitation of the pipes instruments where the air flow never stops, so you have to “cut” two of the same note using your left hands. In Kerfunken I like to cut with the 2nd finger because it adds some melodic elements along with the rhythmic nature of the cut. (Often you might use 3rd so it’s really just a stop of the string without any sound of the note.)

Let’s practice the notes without the cut, and then "cut" it, and then put it with a couple other notes from the tune.
