Frits Thaulow was the consummate painter of Rivers and Streams, made famous by his dedication to the pleinair movement in nineteenthcentury European culture. His brawny stature and hearty personality were welcomed around the social circles of Paris and elsewhere. He was friends with Monet and Carolus Duran, he was straightforward in his approach to painting always looking to the natural world for inspiration, not relying on superficial meanings of mysticism or symbolism or any ism for that matter. Just paint nature with simplicity and a dash of poetry, comparable to Corot.
