The NORAD Santa Tracker originated from a fortunate error in 1955 when a Sears department store advertisement misprinted a phone number for children to call Santa.
Instead, the number connected them to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) operations center.
Colonel Harry Shoup, who answered the first call, instructed his staff to check the radar for signs of Santa Claus and provide updates.
This goodnatured response to a mistake led to an annual tradition, and when NORAD succeeded CONAD, it continued the Santatracking practice, turning it into a beloved holiday tradition.
