Brownells Gun Techs Caleb Savant and Steve Ostrem found this "gunsmith's dream gun" at Rock Island Auction Co.: a custom Mauser bolt action rifle built in 2002 by John Rigby & Co. for Safari Club International. It's chambered in .500 Jeffery, which was developed in the 1920s as a cartridge that would pack a punch similar to the .505 Gibbs or .416 Rigby, yet still fit in a standard Mauser 98 action. The Rock Island / Safari Club Rigby is a trim, compact, easytocarry rifle that still enables you to take on the Big Five of African game. And it's a masterpiece of the gunmaker's art! Practical features include a squarebridge receiver with integral scope mounts, lowride safety, threeleaf express rear sight, front sight with flipdown hood, and a leatherbound recoil pad to help soak up that .500 Jeffery kick. The immaculate ornamentation is suitably British tasteful and not overdone. The stock is cut from beautifully figured wood with perfectly executed wraparound checking on the forearm. There's plenty of exquisite engraving on the metal with just enough inlaid gold to add highlights AND emphasize that this is not your ordinary "factree" bolt rifle. It passes muster even with Caleb, who will not be fooled by a halfa.... halfway job on engraving and checkering. A superb example of the classic British gunmaker's art.
