Body Fix Exercises

You NEED to be adding Mulligan Mobilisations to your home exercises for Frozen Shoulder. This simple addition can help get faster, better results, but very few people know about it. So, in this video I explain (i)which exercises to do for each stage of frozen shoulder, and (ii)how to add Mulligan’s techniques to Frozen Shoulder physical therapy.

WHO GETS FROZEN SHOULDER?:
Frozen Shoulder is a progressive and painful restriction of shoulder movement that tends to happen in 4060 years olds, especially women. You’re more likely to get it if you’ve injured your shoulder recently, but there are other predisposing factors too. (Shoulder injuries, Immobilised Shoulders, Stroke, Heart Conditions, Thyroid Disorders, Parkinson's Disease. Diabetes.)

FROZEN SHOULDER SYMPTOMS: Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder are basically shoulder pain and severe restriction of the shoulder… especially external rotation, flexion and abduction. This will make it very difficult to put on a jacket and reach for things placed up high.

FROZEN SHOULDER DIAGNOSIS: Adhesive Capsulitis (it’s other name) is diagnosed when you are restricted in the direction mentioned above in symptoms and there is no difference to how much you can move you shoulder (active mobility) and how much someone else, like a doctor, can move your shoulder without your help (Passive mobility)

FROZEN SHOULDER MASSAGE: Is there a form of massage that helps Frozen Shoulder? Not really. The muscles around the shoulder will get tight with frozen shoulder as the muscles tighten to guard against pain, but the aim of your treatment shoulder be more based on mobilising the shoulder joint capsule. That’s the underlying issue.

FROZEN SHOULDER EXERCISES :

There’s different exercises you should be doing for each of the 3 stages of Frozen Shoulder. (The Freezing stage, the Frozen stage, and the Thawing stage.) In ‘Adhesive Capsulitis’ (as this condition is often called), the joint capsule around the shoulder socket gets inflamed… and that leads to fibrosis: a thickening & tightening of the joint capsule that restricts the shoulder.

You don’t want to add to the inflammation of the capsule by doing any treatment that’s painful because that can lead to more capsule fibrosis, especially in the first two stages. But you've got to maintain what mobility you can.

THE FREEZING STAGE: In the first stage (where the shoulder is getting more painful and restricted)… do pendulum exercises. They’ll help you maintain what mobility you can without inflaming the capsule more during this stage.

THE FROZEN STAGE: Then as the pain reduces but the restriction remains, start frozen shoulder stretches in four directions. Flexion, extension, abduction, and external rotation. You can use classic broom stick exercises here … here’s where you can add the Mulligan Mobilisations.

MULLIGAN TECHNIQUE FOR FROZEN SHOULDER: By pushing the head of the humerus further back into the shoulder socket you can get more movement out of the shoulder. To do this we push back but also 30 degrees out, to follow the line of the Glenohumeral joint.

THE THAWING STAGE: In the final stage the range of motion slowly improves. Here you can start to use the muscles of the bad arm more to regain some strength that’s lost due to the frozen shoulder. This includes the classic finger walking mobilisations for frozen shoulder.

HOW LONG DOES FROZEN SHOULDER LAST?
Now, 15 months is the average duration of all 3 stages, but hopefully you can reduce this substantially with the Mulligan variations. About 15% of the patients experience longterm issues, so it’s important to continue the exercises until you’re 100%.

HOW TO FIX A FROZEN SHOULDER THAT ISN'T IMPROVING
For people that get stuck in the frozen stage, sometimes some kind of intervention can be necessary:
• HYDRODILATATION is one optionwhere under local anaesthetic fluid is pumped into the shoulder joint to stretch the capsule to loosen it up.
• SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPIC CAPSULAR RELEASE is another option, where a doctor cuts through and releases tight portions of the joint capsule.
• MANIPULATION OF THE SHOULDER UNDER GENERAL ANAESTHETIC is the last option but the manipulation is pretty aggressive.

HOW TO AVOID FROZEN SHOULDER:
Rotator Cuff issues and dysfunction of shoulder movement heavily predisposes you to Frozen Shoulder, especially if you've had it before. So do these:    • How To Fix Shoulder Pain For Good. 3 ...
