Functions of Placenta Part1 in English | Respiratory & Excretory Functions | Nursing Lecture
Functions of Placenta are explained below.
Placenta plays very important role in following
1. Respiratory functions
For exchange of gas across the membrane (o2, co2), simple diffusion takes place, o2 from higher conc. to lower, mother to fetus and Co2 from higher to lower i.e. Fetus to mother.
2. Excretory Function All fetal waste urea, uric acid, creatinine transport from higher to lower conc., into maternal circulation by the process of simple diffusion.
3. Barrier Function Molecules with mol.weight more than 500 dalton can not cross across the membrane, but most of drugs, viruses, bacteria and protozoal infection can easily transmit across membrane.
