A street with the same semidetached houses in Kirchheim unter Teck. Katharina Bader lives here with her husband Mark and two children (six and 20 years old). At first glance, the uniform terraced house does not suit the passionate individualist at all. But with a lot of creativity and craftsmanship, the family has created a cozy home on 143 square meters that is tailormade for them.

Katharina is a teacher at a special education and counseling center, Mark is a chemical engineer. When they bought the house in 2013, things had to move pretty quickly. The family actually wanted to buy the house in 2011 but that didn't work out at first. When they got the goahead, they moved in immediately and only gradually renovated everything and adapted it to their needs.

Katharina's ingenuity keeps the rest of the family on their toes. It's a good thing that Mark is very talented with his hands he did all the tiling work in the house himself, for example. But they have also built furniture and installed lamps together. And they have also designed the garden together with Katharina being very proud of her path made of collected stones.

DIYing and designing things herself that's Katharina's hobby. But she also needs it for her photography. Because she often uses for her motifs the beautiful old furniture and objects that she finds at junk dealers or on the Internet at eBay classifieds. The antiques are then often renovated by her again, sanded or refined. She also likes to give things a new life. For example, she created a mosaic tree on the bathroom wall herself from tile samples and an old broken mirror.

The fact that she doesn't want to throw anything away is one reason why Katharina tinkers and makes so much herself. But she also simply knows exactly what she wants and what she doesn't want. And that's why, she says, she often has no choice but to do it herself. Her style is influenced by Pinterest, she loves vintage pieces and has a flair for coziness. She creates it mainly through small light sources, candles and a loving selection of different seating.

Katharina probably inherited her talent for DIY from her dad. For example, he built the children's house in the garden out of old wooden packaging and made a beautifully decorated window for it. She also inherited her love of plants and small tables or stools made from tree trunks from her dad.

The home's décor will continue to change. The next project is to be a kitchen remodel connecting the kitchen to the dining room to create more work space. Mark still plans to add a water connection for the backyard barbecue area. Emma would like a larger room at some point. And even after that, the family won't run out of ideas.

A film by Katharina Kraft (editor), Oleg Kauz (camera), Cécilia Marchat (sound) and Daniele Guida (editor). Production: EIKON Media GmbH, on behalf of SWR.
