Gaborone is the largest and capital city of Botswana. The city is also refered to as the political capital of the Southern African countries because it's where the headquarters of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The city has a metropolitan population of 270,000 million people that live in it.

The capital city was named after Kgosi Gaborone, leader of the Batlokwa people, who migrated from their ancestral homelands in the Magaliesberg Mountains and in 1881 settled in the Tlokweng area. Gaborone literally means ‘it does not fit badly’ or ‘it is not unbecoming.” The tolerant mindset of Gaborone derives from the gathering of the many different cultures and the thousandsstrong individual minds. The beautification of the edginess inspires, provokes opportunities and creates an intersection where two extremes meet each other and therefore become indefinable. Gaborone lies in a flat valley between Kgale and Oodi Hills, on the Notwane River in southeastern Botswana, about 9 miles (15 kilometers) from the South African border.
Gaborone was founded in 1965, as the capital of Botswana. It is notable that the entire center of the city was constructed within three years. Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, on September 30, 1966, the country became independent within the Commonwealth of nations. Following its independence, Botswana has maintained one of the world's highest economic growth rates.
