Galicia - Journey through the north of Spain | WDR Reisen

Follow
ARD Reisen

A mixture of Ireland, Norway and the Caribbean this is Galicia, Spain's green north with Celtic heritage. Judith Rakers explores the high cliffs, nature parks with waterfalls and dense forests, fjordlike inlets and the beautiful beaches of the uninhabited island paradise Islas Cies. On the Way of St. James, she makes a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and visits the impressive cathedral. Judith Rakers experienced first hand that fishing and mussel farming are still of great importance to the people of Galicia: In Porto de Corme she meets women who are handcrafting huge fishing nets, and she goes out with a fisherwoman to collect barnacles.

Coastal forests with deep canyons and rock cathedrals in the sea
The forest area around the Rio Tambre is one of the best preserved Atlantic coastal forests in Europe: deep gorges, green forests, a unique animal kingdom and a kayak tour await Judith Rakers. The Praia das Catedrais becomes a natural wonder at low tide: Then the up to 30 meter high rocks rise out of the water like Gothic cathedrals on the beach.

On the Way of St. James from Santiago de Compostela to the end of the world
The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the symbol of Galicia and the destination of millions of pilgrims. Judith Rakers is given a private tour, takes part in the service and gets to know the religious background of a pilgrimage. On the way to Cape Finisterre the end of the world, she learns why people even go on the Camino de Santiago.

About Spanish bagpipes and precious barnacles
A musical legacy of the Celts is the gaita, the traditional Spanish bagpipes. Judith Rakers meets Susana Seivane, who became a folk rock star with her gaita music. Her family has been building the traditional instrument for generations and shows Judith how to do it. Another specialty of Galicia are barnacles. The delicacy costs up to 200 euros per kilo. Judith Rakers experiences firsthand how dangerous it is to collect mussels in the rough sea surf on Galicia's "death coast" Costa da Morte.
