If you wanted top tier performance in 2014 but didn't want to overclock or spend extra on the "K" version, then the standard 4790 would have been perfect for you. With 4 cores, 8 threads and a 4GHz turbo, this socket 1150 CPU was ideal for high end gaming PC builders.

Fast forward to 2023 and you can find these processors on their own or as part of a basic H81 motherboard combo for very little money. I paid less than £50 for mine. Let's see how it does in games, and how it compares to a modern quad core, namely the I3 12300.
