The garden of the Episcopal palace of Castelo Branco is an architectural treasure that takes us on an enchanting journey through the Portuguese Baroque.
This garden is one of the most original examples of this style in Portugal.
In particular with regard to statuary: symbolic aspects and the arrangement of its elements in thematic routes.
It was the Bishop of Guarda, D. João de Mendonça (17111736) who commissioned and probably guided the works on the Garden. Later, at the end of the century. XVIII, the second bishop of the Diocese of Castelo Branco, D. Vicente Ferrer da Rocha, carried out some important works there. In 1911, the Garden passed into the hands of the City Council via lease and in 1919 I acquired it definitively.
This rectangularshaped Baroque garden is dominated by balconies and balconies with iron guards and stone balusters. It features five lakes, with worked edges, in which water games are installed. On the intermediate level of the Escadaria dos Reis there are surprising fountains and water features.
Among the boxwood beds, symbolic granite statues stand, highlighting the AllNew Man, the Four Cardinal Virtues, the Three Theological Virtues, the Signs of the Zodiac, the Parts of the World, the Four Seasons of the Year, Fire and Hunting. Arranged like a staircase, the Apostles and Kings of Portugal up to D. José I are represented.

O Jardim do Paço Episcopal de Castelo Branco é um tesouro arquitetônico que nos leva a uma viagem encantadora pelo barroco português.
Este jardim é um dos exemplos mais originais desse estilo em Portugal.
Em especial no que respeita à estatuária: aos aspetos simbólicos e à disposição dos seus elementos em percursos temáticos.
Foi o Bispo da Guarda, D. João de Mendonça (17111736) que encomendou e provavelmente orientou as obras do Jardim. Mais tarde, já no fim do séc. XVIII, o segundo bispo da Diocese de Castelo Branco, D. Vicente Ferrer da Rocha fez ali obras de algum relevo. Em 1911, o Jardim passa para as mãos da Câmara Municipal por arrendamento e em 1919 adquirio a título definitivo.
Este jardim Barroco, em forma retangular, é dominado por balcões e varandas com guardas de ferro e balaústres de cantaria. Apresenta cinco lagos, com bordos trabalhados, nos quais estão instalados jogos de água. No patamar intermédio da Escadaria dos Reis existem repuxos e jogos de água surpreendentes.
Por entre os canteiros de buxo erguemse simbólicas estátuas de granito, em que se destacam os Novíssimos do Homem, Quatro Virtudes Cardeais, as Três Virtudes Teologais, os Signos do Zodíaco, as Partes do Mundo, as Quatro Estações do Ano, o Fogo e a Caça. Dispostos à maneira de escadório, encontramse representados os Apóstolos e os Reis de Portugal até D. José I.
