Gastrulation | Formation of Germ Layers | Ectoderm Mesoderm and Endoderm

Lesson on Gastrulation and the Formation of the 3 Germ Layers known as the Ectoderm, Mesoderm and Endoderm. Gastrulation is a process whereby a bilaminar disc (comprising the epiblast and hypoblast cells) gets transformed into a trilaminar disc (comprising the germ layers of ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm). Gastrulation is responsible for forming the 3 germ layers including the ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm.

After the egg is fertilized by a sperm, the resulting zygote will eventually develop into a blastocyst, which contains an inner cell mass that will become the embryo. The outer cells on the blastocyst are known as trophoblasts, which differentiate into syncytial trophoblasts and cytotrophoblasts. The syncytial trophoblasts will invade the endometrium of the uterus and implant the blastocyst. The blastocyst will eventually become embedded into the endometrium. The inner cell mass of the blastocyst will differentiate into epiblast and hypoblast cells, forming the bilaminar disc. The process of gastrulation transforms this bilaminar disc into a trilaminar disc comprised of the 3 germ layers.
