Generative Cartoons: the End for Animators or a New Beginning?

Rig Theory

Things are moving so fast in the Generative Ai space that I have only scratched the surface but let's talk about what Generative Cartoons mean for rigging artists and keyframe animators. There are things about Generative Ai that's really exciting. But there are things about Ai that are really frustrating. Instead of manipulating parts of a single character, we can now direct entire scenes with just an image or a few lines of text. But we don't have the creative control that we're used to!

An animation workflow developed around generative video won't have the usual requirements for rigging and keyframe animations. And if (since) text prompts, images, and videos can generate animations in any art style, creators of all talent levels can create things that look like cartoons but aren't traditionally animated. In order for us animators to stay involved as puppeteers and keyframe animators, we can use a videotovideo method to realize our animation sequences. By animating a simple skeletal rig, we can provide the input for generative AI to dress them with flesh and clothes and transform them into fully realized animation sequences.
