Thanks to numerous chronicles, no one doubts the date and place of Genghis Khan's death. His death occurred in the late summer or early autumn of 1227, when the Mongol army was besieging the capital of the Tangut kingdom — the city of Zhongxing. The last campaign of the great commander was no less successful than almost all the previous ones. The Mongol army practically destroyed the conquered state.

The Persian scholar Rashid alDin (circa 12471318) wrote in his historical work "Jami attawarih" that Genghis Khan died before the capture of Zhongxing. But the Chinese chronicle "Yuanshi", compiled in the XIV century under the leadership of the statesman Sun Lian, contains information that the ruler of a huge empire died after the victory over the Tanguts.

The historical monument "The Secret Legend of the Mongols", the author of which is unknown, tells about the life of steppe nomads in the XIIXIII centuries. According to this ancient text, Genghis Khan felt ill during a diplomatic reception: the Tangut ruler came to the enemy's headquarters with rich gifts, hoping to appease the leader of the Mongols. But the attempt to solve the case by peace ended in complete failure. Zhongxing was captured, and Genghis Khan died immediately after that. His third son Ogedei became his heir.
