Genitofemoral nerve anatomy

Follow
Sam Webster

The genitofemoral nerve starts from the L1 and L2 spinal nerve roots of the lumbar plexus and makes its way through the psoas major muscle towards the inguinal ligament. Before it gets there it divides into genital and femoral branches, the femoral branch running posterior to the inguinal ligament and into the proximal anterior thigh, and the genital branch running through the inguinal canal.

Damage to this nerve can cause pain, and it is somewhat vulnerable to injury at a couple of locations.
