Geology of the Sevier Fault and the scenic entrance to Red Canyon/Bryce Canyon NP in southern Utah

Follow
Shawn Willsey

Red Canyon, the scenic west entrance into Bryce Canyon country, makes an abrupt appearance along Highway 12 due to the Sevier fault, a large normal fault that elevates the Paunsaugunt Plateau and Bryce Canyon National Park to over 8,000 feet above sea level. Join geology professor Shawn Willsey as he shows you this classic scenic fault and the two different rock types juxtaposed by the fault: black basalt (lava flow) and the pink sedimentary rocks that make the Bryce Canyon area so beautiful.

GPS location (estimated from Google Earth): 37.74927, 112.32993
