Geometric Distribution EXPLAINED with Examples

Ace Tutors

Learn how to solve any Geometric Distribution problem in Statistics! In this tutorial, we first explain the concept behind the Geometric Distribution at a highlevel. Then we explain why this distribution requires the same conditions, BINS, to be met as the Binomial Distribution. Next we cover some key parameters of this distribution like its Mean, Standard Deviation and Probability Formula. We also take it a step further and explain exactly where the probability formula comes from and how it works. Finally we wrap things up with a full example to solidify all ideas explained in the video.

NOTES:
In our example, we did not explicitly answer the question about expected value correctly. The question asked how many lights we can expect to hit before we make it through one. We solved it by using the expected value formula which gives you the expected trial for which you would expect to get the first success. Although we interpreted our expected value correctly by saying, "on any given night we can expect to come across our first green light by the 5th one", this does not answer how many we would hit before we get that first green which would actually be 4!
