At the Baltic Sea construction of the world's longest underwater rail and road tunnel is underway. The 18kilometer passageway, due to be completed in 2029, will link Denmark and Germany. The €10 billion project crosses a stretch of the Baltic Sea known as the Fehmarn Belt and will have two doublelane motorways and two electrified rail tracks. The entire tunnel will be built using prefab concrete elements.
Right now it's not much more than Europe's largest construction site on the coast of Denmark, 2000 workers are busy preparing for the tunnel. It will consist of prefab sections, currently undergoing testing. The prefab segments the tunnel will be built from will later allow for two tracks for trains and two roadways for cars and other vehicles. Each one is over 200 meters long and 42 meters wide. The segments will be built on land, lowered into the sea and connected at a depth of 30 meters.
