Germany participates at the IMO since 1991, whereas East Germany and West Germany had participated since 1959 and 1977, respectively. In the recent history, the best performance of a German team on an IMO was the 10th place in 1996 and 2002. A number of students is invited to a training program based on two preliminary selection exams, and the IMO team is selected from these students through several tests during the training program.
