Whether you have just started feeding hummingbirds or you consider yourself a pro, we have a few tips on getting more hummingbirds to your backyard. In this video we cover feeder placement to create territories, hummingbird friendly flowers and more! I started with one hummingbird and now have hundreds feeding at a time!

Have you just started feeding hummingbirds? Welcome on board! Waiting for the hummingbirds to find you takes a bit of patience, but you can help speed things up.

First, hang your feeder out in the open so they are clearly visible from the sky. Once you have brought some birds down to your property, you can hang feeders closer to your house or in a more shady spot under a tree. But the hummingbirds have to have a reason to fly down and check out your backyard!

Change your food frequently. Daily when the temperature gets up to 80 degrees. Bacteria multiplies rapidly in the heat. If you wouldn’t drink a sweet drink that has been sitting out in the heat for two days, don’t expect the hummingbirds to drink it. You don’t have to fill the feeders all the way. Just put as much food out as your birds will consume in a day. Fresh food will keep the hummingbirds coming for more. And keeping the feeders clean is equally important.

Hang more feeders far apart to create different territories. Hummingbirds are very territorial, so if you want a lot of them, you need to create different territories. I have so many hummingbirds that their territories have narrowed down to an individual port on a feeder and they will fight over the one port!

Plant hummingbirdfriendly flowers. Flowers maintain the nectar by themselves, so you don’t have to worry about cleaning and filling feeders. If you have lots of flowers that hummingbirds like, they will find you. Go to your local garden center and ask them what hummingbird plants are native to your area. Salvia, bee balm, sage and honeysuckle are a few that they love. If you don’t have room for a garden, hang baskets of fuchsia. Hummingbirds adore this plant.

Hummingbirds actually prefer flowers to feeders. That is why during the Spring when the flowers start blooming, people notice a drop in the number of birds coming to their feeders. The birds simply have more food choices.

Hummingbirds have fabulous memories. Once a a hummingbird finds you and likes your food, the bird will always remember exactly where you are and will come back to you year after year.
