Getting Inspired at Porthleven Cornwall! A textile and sea glass art project

Follow
Cornish Walking Trails

In this video we go beach combing for sea glass on Porthleven beach but do we find any? After taking a wonder around the town, we muse about what Porthleven means to us. Porthleven is now a popular tourist destination, and hosts an annual food festival attracting 1000s of visitors to sample food, wine and other favourites produced in the County. In the winter the town can be ravaged by ferocious storms, attracting photographers at a safe distance!!

I will show you how I incorporate sea glass into an artistic interpretation of Porthleven, using an unusual process. For this project I used acrylics, fabric, sea glass, beads and Bondaweb.

The technique, in brief:
1. Sketch your image on the paper side of the bondaweb
2. Flip it over and, using acrylics, paint your image.
3. With the paper side up, place on a piece of fabric and iron to fuse the image to the fabric.
4. After attaching to an embroidery frame, embellish with sea glass, embroidery, and beads.
Your image is now ready to frame!

These pieces are currently available to buy on my Etsy store: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CornishW...

The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on YouTube, usually weekly. Occasionally we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too! The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

Frequently asked questions:
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII

How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.

Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
