ACHS Historian Tim Smith describes the fighting near the brickyard on the afternoon of July 1, 1863. Coster's Brigade stood and faced two brigades under Confederate General Jubal Early: Hays & Avery, while the remainder of the Eleventh Corps pulled back through the town of Gettysburg to Cemetery Hill. Tim then discusses visible artillery shells & damage on the northeast side of Gettysburg near the fighting that took place in the brickyard.
