God was displeased by the Israelites in some way, so He allowed the Midianites to hold them captive for seven years. The Israelites' crops were ruined by the Midianites, who also took their cattle. The Israelites received no food from them. Gideon saw an angel that the Lord had sent. The angel predicted that he would be the Israelites' champion while they spoke. God guaranteed Gideon success and protection. Gideon was then instructed by God to gather some meat and unleavened cakes, which he accomplished and then laid on a rock before God devoured them with fire. Gideon constructed an altar to God after recognizing it was God. God gave him the order to dismantle his father's shrine to Baal later that evening. The villagers planned to murder Gideon, but Gideon's father Joash persuaded them against it. Then they started calling Gideon "Jerubbaal," which is Hebrew for "Let Baal act." Amalek and the Midianites entered the Jezreel valley to assault. Gideon asked God to do one favor for him since he wasn't sure. Gideon requested that the floor be left dry and a wool fleece be saturated with dew. When this occurred, Gideon was still unsure and prayed to God that He would reverse what He had done the previous evening. The opposite of what had happened the day before happened. These indications convinced Jerubbaal that God was on his side. God warned Gideon that he had too many warriors since he had 32,000 of them. God then instructed the men to "go and tell the men that if they are afraid, they may leave." With 20,000 troops gone, Gideon was left with 10,000 men. There are still too many soldiers, God replied to Gideon as he came to him once more. I will put them to the test for you there, so lead them down to the river. I'm going to inform you that a certain man has to go with you. But if I tell you that he shouldn't, then nobody is supposed to go. Gideon then escorted his troops to the river. Tell the men to drink, the Lord instructed Gideon. Men who swim in the water like dogs will be freed. There were still 300 guys around. Then Gideon relocated his troops to a location above the Midianites' valley. The following evening, the Lord instructed Gideon to approach the camp, and if you are terrified, bring your companion Purah with you. Gideon heard chatter of his troops while traveling with his assistant Purah to the camp outposts. The Israelites were then urged to get up since God had freed them from the Midian camp when he returned to their camp. Tell the men to drink, the Lord instructed Gideon. Men who swim in the water like dogs will be freed. There were still 300 guys around. Then Gideon relocated his troops to a location above the Midianites' valley. The following evening, the Lord instructed Gideon to approach the camp, and if you are terrified, bring your companion Purah with you.
