Godzilla is a fictitious prehistoric reptile monster that was awoken and powered by nuclear radiation. He is one of the most recognizable symbols of Japanese popular culture across the world, as well as a prominent figure in Japanese movies. Godzilla reflected many Japanese people's anxieties about the nuclear strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the prospect of a repeat.

The early Godzilla movies, particularly the 1954 original, depicted Godzilla as a terrifying nuclear monster. As the Godzilla franchise proceeded, he evolved as a character and has become something of an antihero and a hero.
