It’s great to root for the good guy, but we need to be really careful about viewing life in terms of “good guys versus bad guys.” There’s only one truly Good Guy, and that’s God. Only God is good and only God decides what is good and what is evil. We need to recognize that picking sides is not always helpful. Just because one side of an earthly conflict is doing something bad doesn’t mean that the other side is the “good guys.” It’s totally possible for each side to be doing what is wrong! If we pick a side and say, “This is the good guy” then we might assume that whatever they’re doing is right simply because they’re on the “right” side. If we believe that anyone here on earth is truly good, we’re going to be sadly disappointed. And if we’re not careful, we might forget that even “bad guys” are still important to God and worthy of love. Only God is good, and we are only good to the extent that we are following him. There is such a thing as good versus evil, but our battle is not against flesh and blood, and we need to be careful about categorizing people as either good or bad.
