Your MRI can give you misleading results. So, do not worry just after reading your MRI report. It is very much possible that your MRI findings may not correlate with your clinical symptoms of pain and stiffness in back. A systematic review i.e. multiple scientific researches have concluded again and again that slipped disc i.e. disc bulge or disc prolapse is a very common finding amongst the young and middleaged people also. The pain that is present in your back may not be at all due to the disc bulge visible in the MRI film, rather, that back pain could be due to just some sort of muscle weakness or spasm or a positional fault. So, many times, it may not be related to your MRI findings. So, the disc bulge depicted in your MRI film is just an incidental and a common finding and does not really correlate with your backpain complaints. These MRI findings of disc bulge, disc prolapse, herniation or spondylolisthesis are present in those people also who are not experiencing any symptoms of back pain. So, if these findings are present in your MRI, do not just worry. Take a deep breath and relax. These findings are bound to be present due to aging, arthritic changes only and these are quite normal findings which are present in majority of the population, and even in the asymptomatic group of people. Not only in researches, but also, we have experienced these things in our clinical practice of 28 years. There was a case, a young patient, who came with complaint of severe radiating pain in the leg. When he came, he came on the stretcher and was unable to lift the leg not more than 10 degrees. After doing 3 minutes of manual therapy, he could raise his leg upto 70 degrees, and when we went to his home, he didn’t go on a stretcher, rather he walked and even drove back home all by himself.

It is agreed that the disc once prolapsed, does not go back to its place, however, in most of the cases, it shrinks over time, due to degeneration. There are many examples of this. Earlier the disc is like a grape, however, with time, it becomes like a raisin, i.e. it shrinks, it deranges; thereby, vanishing the symptoms of pain and stiffness. Therefore, it is possible to treat disc bulge even without surgery, through proper and guided exercises by an expert spinal manual therapist. So, there is no reason you need to worry about.
