Gracie is teaching her chicks how to scratch and look for bugs.
The 2 new chicks were purchased during the day on June 11, 2024. We estimate they were about 4 to 5 days old. That means they must have been hatched around June 7th, which means they're around 4 weeks old here. I placed them under her in the middle of the night when her clutch of eggs never hatched.
Every night, she takes them into the coop and they sleep together in a nesting box. During the day, the other hens and rooster leave them alone. Gracie walks them around the perimeter of the yard all day, investigating what they can find. She's a very good mother to them, just as she was last year to Tweety.
We see a brief glimpse of some of the other hens and rooster eating feed.
