The gracilis muscle belongs to the adductors of the hip. This group also includes the pectineus, adductor magnus, longus, brevis and minimus muscles. The hip adductors shape the surface anatomy of the medial thigh, with the gracilis being the most superficial of the medial thigh muscles.

The gracilis extends from the inferior border of the pubic symphysis to the superficial pes anserinus on the medial aspect of the tibia.

As most of the other hip adductors, the gracilis is innervated by the obturator nerve. The actions of the gracilis muscle are flexion of the hip and knee joint, internal rotation of the knee and adduction of the thigh.
