In the 5th century BC, the Greek historian Thucydides chronicled the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC), a conflict between Athens, a rising power, and Sparta, the established ruling power. Thucydides famously concluded that "it was the rise of Athens and the fear it instilled in Sparta that made war inevitable."

Today, 2,400 years later, we face a similar situation: will a rising China and an uneasy America follow the same path?

About Luminary:
Graham Allison, former Director of Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, is a bestselling author of "Destined for War: America, China, and Thucydides's Trap" (2017). As the founding dean of the Harvard Kennedy School, Dr. Allison served as Assistant Secretary of Defense and advised defense secretaries from Reagan to Obama. He has received the Department of Defense's Distinguished Public Service Medal twice and serves on advisory boards for the Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense.

Gita Wirjawan is an Indonesian entrepreneur, educator, and Honorary Professor of Politics and International Relations at the School of Politics and International Relations, University of Nottingham.
