Learn how to graph the reciprocal function. A reciprocal function is a rational function whose expression of the variable is in the denominator. A reciprocal function is of the form f(x) = a / (x + h) + k, where h is the vertical stretch/compression, h is a shift to the left (if h is positive) or to the right (if h is negative) and k is a shift up (if k is positive) or down (if k is negative).
To graph a reciprocal function, we first sketch the graph of the parent function f(x) = 1/x and then apply the required transformations.
