I have tested the compact robot actuator from Tmotor AK606. This is quasi direct drive actuator (QDD) with the planetary gearbox. The price is $300 USD. It has MIT mini cheetah like controller. With this actuator I've tried the simple "gravity compensation" and I've build spherical 3DoF joint.
