Video text:

A volcanic eruption began near Grindavík, Iceland on May 29, 2024. This fissure eruption, the fifth since December 2023, lasted for 24 days and produced the largest lava flow yet in the area. Lava flowed primarily between Hagafell and Sýlingarfell mountains, reaching a peak flow rate of 1500 cubic meters per second in the initial stages. The eruption concluded on June 22nd.

While the eruption at the May 29th fissure has ceased, the volcanic activity in the region remains elevated. Magma continues to accumulate beneath the surface at Svartsengi, suggesting a high possibility of another eruption in early July based on past trends. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

The May eruption primarily affected the immediate area, with lava flows contained and minimal disruption to air travel or the Ring Road. However, Zone 3 near the eruption site remains at high risk, while Zones 4 (Grindavík) and 6 are at significant risk due to potential gas emissions and lava flows. Zone 7 has been downgraded to moderate risk. Realtime gas monitoring is ongoing.

The risks remain high in certain zones due to potential gas emissions and lava flows. As the situation evolves, ongoing monitoring and preparedness are crucial to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the affected areas.
